Magnolia officinalis bark · 후박 (Hupak)
The dried bark of the official magnolia — a pillar of traditional Korean medicine (hupak). It concentrates magnolol and honokiol, two bisphenols with exceptional anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Different from the magnolia flower (kobus), it is the bark that contains the actives.

Magnolol and honokiol inhibit the NF-κB pathway in a dose-dependent manner. They modulate the activity of 5-lipoxygenase and inhibit bacterial proliferation. Anti-stress effect documented through modulation of GABA-A receptors.

Histoire et usage ancestral
Hupak has been in the Korean pharmacopoeia for 1,500 years. The Donguibogam cites it in 40+ formulas. Traditionally harvested in spring from trees at least 20 years old. Its scientific cosmetic use began in the 2000s.
