Paeonia lactiflora · 작약 (Jakyak)
The peony root — not the flower — is one of the most precious ingredients in traditional pharmacopoeia. It contains paeoniflorins and albiflorins with anti-inflammatory, firming and brightening effects. It is the active of high-end Korean 'royal skin' serums.

Paeoniflorin inhibits tyrosinase (effect on spots) and modulates the NF-κB pathway (anti-inflammatory). The root polysaccharides stimulate fibroblasts (collagen synthesis). The overall effect is denser, more even, more luminous skin.

Peony is a major medicinal plant of traditional Korean medicine (Hanui). The Donguibogam cites it in 60+ formulas. Under Joseon, its root was harvested in autumn, dried and preserved with care. A decoction of peony + ginseng + jujube was the anti-aging tonic of queens.
