The gentlest of the AHAs, derived from bitter almonds. Its molecule is 4× larger than that of glycolic — it penetrates less deeply and causes less irritation. Ideal for starting an acid exfoliation routine, particularly on sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Le mécanisme
Mandelic acid has a molecular mass of 152 g/mol (vs 76 for glycolic), penetrates more slowly, and produces a more uniform exfoliation. It has a direct antibacterial effect on C. acnes — useful for inflammatory acne.
Tradition ancestrale
Isolated in 1831 by hydrolysis of amygdalin (present in bitter almonds). Its cosmetic use developed in the 1990s as a gentle alternative to glycolic. Widely adopted in K-beauty for sensitive skin.
