Instagram calls it "glass skin". In the 17th century, Heo Jun simply called it "a face that holds the light". The same skin, the same gesture, five centuries apart — and still seven layers of hydration, in the exact order. Here is the method.
What is glass skin, really?
Skin that looks translucent, dense, perfectly smoothed. No visible pores, no dry spots, no greasy shine — just an even luminosity that reflects light like glass. The secret is neither genetic nor surgical: it is hydration in successive layers, the central principle of Korean cosmetics since the Joseon dynasty.
The Donguibogam, royal medical treatise of 1613, puts it differently: "When the skin is saturated with water to its seven thicknesses, it no longer reflects dryness but moisture." Seven thicknesses. Seven layers. Not one more, not one less.
The seven steps of the ritual
To practice in the evening, on clean and warm skin. Count about twelve minutes. Space each layer by fifteen seconds — that's the time needed for the previous one to absorb.
- 01
Double cleansing
A rice oil cleanser to dissolve makeup and SPF. Then a gentle low-foam cleanser for water residues. Pat dry, never rub.
- 02
Hydrating toner
Not an old-school astringent toner — an alcohol-free toner-essence at pH 5.5. Pat with hands, never cotton. This is the first water layer.
- 03
Fermented rice essence
The signature step. The watery essence penetrates the superficial layers and deposits niacinamide, peptides and γ-oryzanol. Second layer.
- 04
Targeted serum
Chosen for the day's needs: red ginseng if fatigue, centella if redness, mugwort if oxidative stress. Third layer, denser.
- 05
Ampoule
Concentrated and anti-aging — propolis or long-chain peptide. Fourth layer, applied with gentle pressure.
- 06
Sealing cream
With Korean honey or camellia oil. It locks in previous layers and prevents water from evaporating. Fifth layer.
- 07
Night mask or final mist
Once or twice a week, a sleeping mask that works during sleep. Other evenings, simply a hydrating mist. Sixth and seventh layers.
The three mistakes to avoid
1. Stacking without waiting. Layers must absorb, not mix on the surface. Count quietly to yourself.
2. Rubbing with cotton. Cotton absorbs between 30 and 50% of the applied product. Clean hands, patting — always.
3. Skipping serum some evenings. The serum is the treating layer. Without it, you hydrate without transforming. Glass skin is not only about water, it's also about structure.
How long before seeing results?
Fourteen days for texture — fewer visible pores, smoother surface. Thirty days for luminosity — the characteristic mirror effect. Ninety days for holding — glass skin becomes your default skin state, not a momentary glow.
