Morning glow routine: step by step
The day ritual of Joseon queens, adapted for your modern morning. Five minutes, six gestures, in the exact order.
At the palace, women didn't have five minutes — they had an hour and a half. But the principle remains exactly the same: lay each layer in the right order, never skip a step, never rub. Here is the sequence as practiced, timed to a tight 5 minutes.
- 06:30 30 sec
Step 01
Gentle rice water cleanser
A few drops in the palm, lather with a little warm water, massage the face in ascending circles for 20 seconds, rinse with cool water. Pat dry with a cotton towel washed at 60 °C.
Tip · Cool water closes pores. Hot water dilates them — to avoid in the morning.
- 06:31 20 sec
Step 02
Fermented rice toner-essence
3-4 drops in the palm, briefly rub hands to warm, pat on the face by pressing. No cotton, no massage — just gentle pressures from forehead to chin.
Tip · Patting by pressing absorbs 3× more than circular massage.
- 06:32 40 sec
Step 03
Antioxidant serum (vitamin C or ginseng)
A drop in the palm, warm, press onto face and neck. Insist on cheekbones and T-zone. Let absorb 30 seconds before next step.
Tip · Vitamin C protects from UV better than any SPF alone. Never skip this step.
- 06:33 40 sec
Step 04
Honey or camellia moisturizer
A more generous drop. Always warm hands, always pressing — never aggressive circles. The face should be warm to touch when you're done.
Tip · If oily skin, opt for camellia (lighter). If dry skin, honey (more nourishing).
- 06:34 30 sec
Step 05
Eye contour
Index finger tip on the orbital bone, under the eye and at the outer corner. Small light pats, never pulling the skin. This area is five times thinner than the rest of the face — it forgives no negligence.
Tip · Store your eye cream in the fridge. The coolness decongests in seconds.
- 06:35 60 sec
Step 06
SPF 50 — the day's sealing layer
A generous amount, evenly spread. Insist on nose bridge, cheekbones, ears. Reapply every 2 hours if prolonged sun exposure.
Tip · Korean essence-textured SPFs leave no white cast and don't sting the eyes. The difference is night and day.
If you only have three minutes
Keep: 02 (toner), 03 (serum), 06 (SPF). Skip the cleanser (warm water suffices in the morning), skip the cream (young, well-hydrated skin), skip the eye contour (move it to evening). You keep 80% of the benefit in 50% of the time.
